I found out a long time ago, that if you tell some people that you need something they are always willing to SELL it to you. If you make a point to let them know that you're rebuilding some aircraft, they are REALLY willing to SELL it to you, usually at an outrageous price. So, the thing to do is 1....

Looks absolutely great. Now that you have, what are you going to do with it?

Are you going to be a bit more specific?

And why is it not on Scott's listing?

So, where is this "C" model you're referring to?

Find a copy of AIR CLASSICS magazine (Vol. 35, Nr. 9 - October, 1999) and you can read the story of what happened. Also, if you're interested, you can read the story on the real reason for the crash of the prototype Model 299 (there never was an XB-17). That's in AIR CLASSICS (Vol. 33, Nr. 4 - April...

Thanks for the link, Dave. However, it's the wrong "C" model. Everyone knows about this one. The one I was referring to was one of the ones sold to England as a Fortress I. One of them crashed (I don't recall just when or where) and the wreckage is still supposedly at the crashsite, at least it was ...

The second ship would be TB-25N 43-28204 (N9856C), better known as Pacific Princess. At the time of the picture she was painted as a PBJ. Also, when I was at THE AIR MUSEUM, back in the sixties, the second aircraft didn't have the tail gunner's position. The inside was plushed out, there was no bomb...

I seem to recall that, many years ago, FLYPAST Magazine ran a picture of the crashsite of one of the "C" models (Fortress I) sent over to England. It would be interesting to see just what, if anything, could be recoverable from the site.

The "Swoose" will never fly again, and besides it's been so modified that it's really not much more than "D" shell with a "B" wing.

Since the "E" in Washington (Paul Allen's) flew to it's current base, it will probably be restored and flying, again, long before "THE RAT" is.

I know that someone, like Scott, will come up with the S/Ns for these three, but from what I see . . . The first one is one, of I believe three, that Dave Tallichett acquired after the movie. The second looks to be Aero Trader's "Pacific Princess", in it's early years. The third was indeed once used...

I don't know if you're just talking about those aircraft in the U.S., but there are, at least, three "E" model B-17s in New Guinea, including "Swamp Ghost", all of which have framed nose pieces.

In reference to your comments about the framed nose piece, you've seemed to have forgotten about "My Gal Sal".

Not only would a shark tailed B-17 be faster because of the lighter weight, but they were a lot more streamlined too.

According to DryMartini, the engineering data is available on microfilm. The point of using one of the two current restoration projects is that the bomb-bay sections and the "G" model wings would make the creation of a "D" model possible, since these sections are pretty much the same from the "D" mo...

I'll bet that if you did some research, you'd find that the general (warbird) public is not all that small and are the ones that offer the support, and the donations. Much more than the (normal) general public. Also, I'll label anybody "egomanical" that says the public wouldn't know the difference b...
