Re: Random question, authorized paint colors for B-17s?

Aircraft markings for the most part were very strictly standardized, which is one reason a person knowledgeable say for a B-24 can look at the camouflage scheme and tell if the aircraft was a Ford build vs a Consolidated ship (etc....). For a B-17 (especially for the early Boeing ships) there was mi...

Re: Eight myths about the B-17

Myth #10 all the late B-17F's had chin turrets.... * * * Let's add to the B-17 history: 1) The B-17 was designed as a long range medium bomber. 2) If WWII had started 1-year earlier or 1-year later, the B-17 would have been retired as obsolete as the F4F or TBD-1; Boeing was in talks with Consolidat...

Re: Attn shoppers: Hendricks (?) #38

Pretty sure you nailed it with Hendricks - deos not have the weird 3's found on Lockbourne ships.

New one for the files, I only previously had a B-17G for " 38 "

Re: “Texas Raiders” crash; 11/12/22

CBSTexas posted last year the Airboss audio.

What makes this video stand out is at the 1:30 mark is a very clear shot of the wing section post fire

Re: Early days in the ETO

A lot of the much older books while interesting should often be apporached with trepadation and caution; much of this material has been superseeded with much newer material. Robert Archer's book on aircraft markings indicates that the yellow ring was more of a MTO marking (as indicated for Torch). I...

Messed with the image a biot more - found if you have photoshop colorize the original then greyscale you get a better result

Both the A-24 and P-39 become more distinctive.

Thanks for posting them.

Re: Searching for pics of 41-2499

I don't think so; the picture of 1-2499 in Allahabad in early '41 shows it without the ball turret in the belly. I have no sense of when/how they did upgrades in the field, but this was clearly before it was back in CONUS, before the image with "jungle" camoflage at Hendricks Field. But I thank you...

Could this be N17W - not too many unstaggered waist position ships in 1954

Re: The Bozeman Bomber: B-17F 42-3470

At the time of the Mid-air over MacDill 42-3470 was according to the accident report had an RCL of M-B3

Any markings for the third Air Force marked with the squadron of " 5" meant a HQ aircraft and worn out for training

Re: B-17C Update

In the really early 70s my Boy Scout Troop was doing a required cross-country hike for some badge. You know the sort that you use your map and compass and just hike out into the woods. We found a relatively intact B-17 and informed the Rangers. Any chance of an ID on that B-17? I imagine most crash...
