Re: Rebuild of B-17G 44-85734 "Liberty Belle"

Hi all, Part of my job is the procurement of parts. Since the summer of 2011, I've been instructed that any time we have parts, extrusions or tubes made or purchased, I am to buy sufficient for two airplanes. The intent is to have both Liberty Belle and the Labrador B-17 restored, first priority bei...

Re: Rebuild of B-17F 42-3455 "Lucky 13"

is that the tail end of Liberty Belle in one of the photos? I saw that and it must be though I am not sure why based on what I have heard about what is going on with Liberty Belle . Perhaps on loan for use as a pattern? I suspect we shall know soon enough when somebody who knows chimes in (eh, Chuc...

Re: Some B17B fun

Yeah, it's an 1820-51. Used on the 'A' and 'B' models 1) The prop governor is at about the 1:00 position, and the "wheel" on the prop governor is to the left (looking from the front). On the -97, it is closer to 12:00 and the wheel is on the right side. 2) The hose coming from the nose case at the 6...

Re: Some B17B fun

Thanks for the closeup. Definitely looks like an upgraded B-17B. Bill, Is that the 1820-51 engine? **EDIT: Answering my own question, yes that is. -51 has the offset location for the prop governor, and no forward lower oil sump. -65 and -97 are a little more difficult to tell apart, the visual diff...

Wow, what a trip. Great footage, although I did get a little weepy-eyed looking at the scrap piles ;-)

Re: Labrador B-17G 44-83790 restoration

OK, if other people are starting to post pictures, it must be time for an update. I'll get to it soon, in the meantime here's a teaser. This is the astrodome ring mentioned earlier in this thread. Thanks, Dave. http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn147/cgiese0001/Labrador%20B-17/IMG_0121_zpsfc72f7b9....

Scott,

You're welcome. One of the reasons that I do this is that Mr. Brooks has been in contact with the pilots who set her down on the lake, and they are also following along.

Re: Labrador B-17G 44-83790 restoration

We've continued working on the top of the nose section. Both cheek window openings are done, and we're waiting for the new build cheek windows. http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn147/cgiese0001/Labrador%20B-17/DSC01937_zps747b2ff3.jpg http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn147/cgiese0001/Labrador%20...

Re: Labrador B-17G 44-83790 restoration

The next section of the build will be the Bomb Bay. Last year we had a run made of tubes to be used in the major structures of the bomb bay. We've been working with Bill (Dry Martini) and Ray (Lucky 13), and will be doing a group build of the Body Compression Strut and the Cat Walk Truss. Our first ...

Re: The start of Lucky 13

I like the full length rails at the base, that eliminates one potential problem.

I see what you did to brace the cockpit and radio room, good idea.

I should have CAD work on the Cat Walk Truss and Body Compression Strut done today, then it's off to the printer to verify the models.

Yes, that's exactly what we're looking for, the deep "V" hat channel. It looks like the piece that it's attached to has the center part cut away. What's missing would have had a "Z" bend that reinforces the inside lip of the astrodome fairing.

Re: Labrador B-17G 44-83790 restoration

Now that the dust has settled after the holidays, here's the latest update: The windows have been rivetted in, and the structure for the top of the nose is in place. (The astrodome fairing is fiberglass, and was borrowed by another restoration, who made aluminum copies. We'll be using one of those w...
