Re: Photo of B-17F 42-6107 at Clarkston, WA c. 1945

What is interesting to me is that the B-17 was transferred from the RFC to the Washington State Department of Public Instruction at Clarkston, but the article speaks of an Idaho school. Could have been to facilitate but Sturges got it from the Washington entity.

Photo of B-17F 42-6107 at Clarkston, WA c. 1945

I visited an antique shop at the site of the old Asotin County Airport at Clarkston, Washington, yesterday. They had this photo of B-17F 42-6107 framed on a wall, and they were gracious enough to let me copy it. It's a view I have not seen before...most likely close to its arrival for educational pu...

B-17 Wing AD to be issued on 5/17

Looks like an AD will be issued on Wednesday, 5/17. This link shows what is coming. https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2023-10624.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0UajFGs1C54k5CkSiSxy_MPKUUo1zrpyNklNxjD8uVAbRd8fKRVTRVUTs I think Vintage Aviation News was the first to spot it. https://warbirdsnews.com/

Re: Mantz Storage Photos

I think those three are Jennies based on the rigging on the outboard of each wing above the outboard struts. The wing struts and also how they mount to the area around the cockpit suggest Jenny. Interesting that two of the fuselage numbers match in both photos. However, the "U.S. Navy" markings forw...

Re: Mantz Storage Photos

Yes, as I explained on the item in the photo gallery, the starring aircraft was a modified Standard J-1. Bruce Orriss thinks the Jennies might have been used as backdrop aircraft. That second photo is interesting and bears further study.

Mantz Storage Photos

I just added four photos to my Paul Mantz Photo Gallery #3 at https://www.aerovintage.com/tallmantz-aviation/paul-mantz-photo-gallery-3/ These photos appear to have been taken at Orange County in the mid-to-late 1950s. They were provided courtesy of aviation artist Ron Cole who posted them to his Fa...

Postwar Aircraft Disposal

I posted a .pdf copy of a 1992 article I did for the Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society on Postwar Aircraft Disposal . It was an in depth look at the whole process and might be of interest to those on this site. The information presented remains largely unchanged even 31 years later...

Tallman Aviation at Flabob

Michael O'Leary recently sent me a copy of this photo from the Doug Fisher collection. It is particularly interesting to me because it gives a good view of the Tallman Aviation at Flabob Airport. Tallman Aviation was established c. 1958 and merged into Tallmantz in late 1961. There is no record of T...

Well, the AAC did not call it a B-17. It’s a fine point.

You would think, but it wasn’t a B-17. Model 299 prototype.
