The First Civil B-17 (Fall 1945): NX60475

I just added a post at aerovintage.com about a bit of a little-known B-17F that turns out to have been the first U.S. civil B-17 when it flew for Sperry Gyroscopic Co. to test an autopilot installation in the fall of 1945. That B-17, s/n 41-24434 , had an interesting history even before it went to S...

Looks like you got it…or at least a B-17 with a Martin turret.

Re: Yankee Lady grounded out of caution; New AD coming?

So, why build new spar caps if the problem is the fuselage attach points?

Yankee Lady grounded out of caution; New AD coming?

Out in the ether this morning: Yankee Air Museum has grounded B-17G Yankee Lady , expecting a new FAA AD concerning wing attach structure and/or wing spars. No actual FAA info yet. I added a post to my website with an overview: https://www.aerovintage.com/2023/04/15/new-b-17-wing-ad-forthcoming/?mc_...

Re: Martin 250CE in a B-17?

Taigh,

Thanks for posting this. I, for one, have never seen a Martin turret installed at the top turret position. Presumably, for gunnery training. Is the mounting ring gear the same or would it have taken a more involved modification?

Too bad no serial is presented.

Re: Kermit Weeks B-17 Suzy Q

No change to the status of 44-83525...photos as of late 2022 showed the airplane remains in storage. My understanding from discussions with Mr. Weeks years ago is that there are some tax/legal/foundation issues with 44-83525 so its status is unlikely to change until something happens to resolve thos...

Re: What's the story with 41-9137?

For what it is worth department: Sources I looked at said the red part of the RAF fin flash was always forward, so the right side and left side fin flashes are reversed in that order. I’ve never seen any French markings applied to a pre-delivery B-17E. This photo was published in July 1942 but when ...

U.S. Civil B-17s 1949-1955

I just added a post to the Aero Vintage website about those B-17s that came to the U.S. civil register between 1949 and 1955. By my count, there were four active B-17s in later 1948, and eight active in 1955. See it here: https://www.aerovintage.com/home/blog/ https://www.aerovintage.com/wp-content/...

Not me, but that was some hard landing to bend engine nacelles.

Frank, This panel is displayed at the EAA Eagle Museum at Oshkosh but is still owned by the CAF. We have it listed on this webpage at the Aero Vintage site: https://www.aerovintage.com/b-17-locator-nose-art-panels/ The serial number remains unknown so maybe your request will draw some responses from...

Sorry for added confusion. I did mean the photo posted by Second Air Force and not the original photo. My mistake.
