Re: Paul Allen's B-17E 41-9210 for sale

It really depends on a lot of things, as far as how much is left to do. IF the forward fusalauge is structurally sound, and IF all the components are already rebuilt/on hand, then it is one giant jigsaw puzzle and it CAN go together quickly. Depending on how many actual technicians they want to hire...

Re: Another Technical School B-17 Hunt

Oh, and I did do a search using "b-18" as my subject. Unfortunately there was an incident with four B-18s before the war that really crowds out your search results. Google has really gone down hill as a search engine. I use to put in a search term and get back half a billion hits and now sometimes I...

Re: Another Technical School B-17 Hunt

I looked up the city directories and found that the owners were Edward T. Denham Jr and Fred O. Joyner. It looks like they were in operation crom about 1947 to circa 1960. Though Mr Joyner appears to have moved on by the mid 50s. I checked both their obituaries and there is no mention of them. The p...

Re: Is this a Hawiian depot Camo B-17?

Nice find with the Kingman pics! I think the pic I found showed an ac with a red border. Early G would still be possible. I actually think those pics are more interesting than the one I found. I have never in 50 years seen a camo G. I would really love to see the original negative to see if the resu...

Re: Is this a Hawiian depot Camo B-17?

Hey Bill,

That is assuming there has never been an engine/prop change. Or was there a legitimate reason to keep the original props? This pic would have been taken probably in 43 at a stateside training base.

Soooooo....props aside, do you see the difference in color on fuselage?

Is this a Hawiian depot Camo B-17?

Found this while surfing here:https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8muds9/my_wifes_grandpa_and_his_bomber_crew_during/ They say it was a training aircraft out of Rapid City c 1943. The color variation makes me think Hawaii depot job. Any thoughts? It won't let me download the file. So I guess you ...

Re: Yet another Air Scouts B-17, plus maybe 2 more

Dave there are some...inconsistancies with what you posted. This is the first that I have heard of any B-17s being held by the Swiss past the immediate post war Period. In fact if there b-17s just lying around why did they have to go to the trouble of pulling one out of a lake for display? It may be...

Re: B-17G "BXH" at Albertus Airport, Illinois, June 1947

I think 44-8911 is the best fit. 5G was transferred in May of 45 to the 388th. 911 was transfered to the 338th on March 21st of 1945. From what I can see she was the last one transfered in. In June 5G and at least one other ship were flown back to CONUS.

Re: B-17G "BXH" at Albertus Airport, Illinois, June 1947

I hate when I spend time on a reply and it completely disappears! 4 hours, well, that is what I get for not rereading and taking notes. I had read where the Kingman birds were specifically put there to be staged to go to the pacific and the war weary birds were left behind. As an A&P pulling the bat...

Re: B-17G "BXH" at Albertus Airport, Illinois, June 1947

Now we know where the "C" code came from and some additional information on her return. As for the reportage of coming from Walnut Ridge. Two things come to mind. The first was that another B-17 had flown into a nearby town..but was that before or after this one? If before then the local news ace, h...

Re: B-17G trainer "BXH"

That wasn't the photo I planed to show: bxh3.jpg This was the photo Scott was talking about. Could "C" simply have been an inventory code? It does look much newer than anything else and it would have had to be applied after coming back to conus anyway.... From it's wartime service: bxh4.jpg Fun!

Re: B-17G trainer "BXH"

This is perplexing: bxh2.jpg She left Europe after VJ day, not doubt of that. Pics of her in Kingman show she was still marked BXH. From the HIstory of the 338th, it is evident that she left with the rest of the Squadron. Meaning there would be absolutely no need for a second aircraft to take her sq...

Re: B-17G trainer "BXH"

BX is the code for the 338th BS. Um...did we just find "5 Grand"????? Didn't one of the news articles talk about going to Seattle? I should probably re-read before saying anything but this is kind of exciting. Especially since we have a report that it might have been buried.
