Re: Post 1940s Scrapping

Thanks Chris you got to Aberdeen before I did. There is a letter from a former serviceman in a 70s or early 80s Air Classics where he tells of "several hundred" B-17s at Aberdeen being used for testing. He indicates that it was used by the USAF as a parts source to keep the fleet running in the 50s....

WW2 B-17 Engine change record holder

In the Februray 1944 edition of "Air Force", on page 45, it is told that Roswell AAF in NM had a B-17F named "Slugger' that currently held the record for flying without an Engine Change: 900 hours. All on her original, from the factory Engines. I have no idea how that stacks up with modern maintenan...

There are pics of the P-43 in Vol. 22, no 6 of Warbirds International.

Re: SO, you want to be a B-17 historian

The Cheek Gun was installed at Cheyanne till the -60-B0 Blocks. But would have been production installed on post -35-VE aircraft. I'm guessing the second was that the first would have had primed nose turret, and the former the nmf nose turret.

Re: A long shot, but worth a try

Here is the thing, someone mentioned that these were repainted with combat markings before being sent home. Under orders of the CG 13th AF. You have to wonder if he was anticipating a war bond tour? Or other potential PR moment. Or perhaps he just wanted to send the old warriors home in full armor i...

Re: A long shot, but worth a try

does anyone else see what looks like a painted over reclining nude woman under the bomb markings. It kinda looks like the same as "Yankee Diddler". As an aside I have excellent color differention. I've been known many times in my Army Career to see things that other people miss, yet are obvious as d...

Re: A long shot, but worth a try

I thought it might be the rose from the photo's then I noticed that the number of kill markings did not match. I counted the missions and it did not match the newspaper article, although it was close.

Re: 1951 news story: B-17s at Bunker Hill "school"

I decided to dig deeper and although a source reports B-17s, B-25s, C-47s as well as B-24s at Bunker Hill, the record from the investigation reveals nothing but B-24s. I now know they had three and possibly 4 B-24's. These were described as trainers for the B-29(sic) and B-32 bombers....seats for 12...

Re: 1951 news story: B-17s at Bunker Hill "school"

Something else that was interesting to me. IF you were an education institution you could purchase a "salable" aircraft with a 40 percent discount. So instead of buying that B-17 for 13 thousand and change you could get it for around $7200. If you're students were primarily G.I.s using the G.I. Bill...

Re: 1951 news story: B-17s at Bunker Hill "school"

Newspaper hype. I went through the congressional file on this investigation and there was some real shady stuff going on. First the C.C, Duke Harrah mentioned in the article was the brother of Bill Harrah the Casino owner. Duke Harrah was a well known parts dealer post war. The whole file makes inte...

Correcting History. Nicaraguan PB4Y-1s NOT B-24s

Or how Nicaragua came into possession of two PB4Y-1 Bombers. In July 1947 two PB4Y-1 bombers BuNo's 38881 and 90137 were purchased from the WAA at Bush Field, Augusta Ga, by Clarance Chamberland of Teterboro NJ. Both had previously served with VP6 ( CG) and had been Struck Off Charge 31 July 1946. C...
