Re: Next B-17 Restoration Rebuild to Fly?

I've seen a lot of mentions of these and I could've sworn I saw some images of a general area that it's been narrowed down to.. Is there any further information to be gathered on these planes? I would love to prove their existence. [/quote] I photos I seen was of a very deep clay pit and a general ...

Re: New Build B-17

Interesting thread. While there is some new-build projects going on, and the NMUSAF is completely uninterested in releasing any airframes...what about current examples currently in storage? I believe a B-17 is currently in storage in Paris, also Pink Lady is currently grounded, isnt there also an ex...

Re: Casting aluminum

Try your local scrap metal dealer. You can find sheets of aluminum diamond plate for reasonable money.

or your local junk yard maybe...if your going to be smelting anyways...some old intake manifolds or cylinder heads can usually be had for cheap...

Re: Pacific B-17F

Interesting shot. What exactly is that instrument outside of the navigator position? I've never seen one of those before. There is definitely an installed cheek gun, its hard to tell if there is a chin turret from the glare on the photo.

Re: SO, you want to be a B-17 historian

While we are on the subject.... https://www.airplanesofthepast.com/images/b17/b17-flying-fortress-homesick-angel.jpg What is up with the B-17F at Offutt? While i don't profess to be a B-17 expert, at first glance this B-17 appears to have a "G" nose, with reversed cheek guns and an astrodome, howeve...

What is also not well known is the entire B-17 fuselage on the early ships was one piece and did not have the break at the radio shack.
Interesting learning fact of the day. Did the production-break aft if the radio room speed up assembly lines?

Re: In the nose of Lacy Lady, 1955

In all fairness to the B-17 Alliance Foundation, IIRC, the "restored" nose was effectively a "new build" using the rotted out original for patterns for parts. Many of the other sections of airframe are also badly rotted out and will need to be replaced entirely. While the inside paint may not be "p...

Re: In the nose of Lacy Lady, 1955

It is most unfortunate that the people that are restoring this very low time B-17 do not have a bloody clue what they are doing..... As seen from the recent "" Restoration "" shots, they painted the interior green, instead of the correct bare metal... I wish these so called people, if they do not h...

Re: 44-8543 in new colors

I still believe Memphis Belle should have been painted as a TB-17F from MacDill. There is a vid out there with an NMUSAF guy talking about restoring the belle, and he said there were many phases that the plane could have been restored back too. IIRC, they chose the phase "as she finished the 25th m...

Re: 44-8543 in new colors

yeah, they spent 10+ years trying to get a chin turret and now they made her a B-17F abortion (ie a B-17F with staggered waist guns). Did not bother asking anybody about getting the color right -- the Triangle-K should be Blue on a light grey background and not white / black.. I was going to ask if...
