Re: Paul Allen's B-17E 41-9210 for sale
wonder how much to convert her to a B-17G and repaint her as 909 AGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! Sacrilege!!!!! That'd be like cutting the bar out of the back window on a '63 Corvette I guess to each his own, and the loss of 909 is still painful to many of us, but the chance to have a FLYABLE E - priceless. (wel...

Re: Second pair of eyes
I'm just relieved that somebody other than me is up early on Christmas morning and thinking about B-17s. Dennis

Re: Casting aluminum
For aluminum "scrap", maybe a local mower shop for junk mowers (much of the engine is made of aluminum). Many years back, the EAA Sport Aviation magazine had a detailed article of how a builder made his own furnace for making aluminum castings. If it is not on the web, I'm sure someone else has come...

Re: Mary Ann in miniature
My pleasure, Bill (if I may presume to address you thus). The film shows the later clear centered stars; IF the film aircraft were marked to fit the plot, the illustrated stars WOULD have been correct! Regards, Dan Well actually, should have insignia on top of left wing and bottom of right wing wit...

Re: B-25s do fly in IMC available on DVD
I believe the movie was "Hanover Street" (Harrison Ford). One of the B-25s was repaired here at St Pete Clearwater Airport (now PIE). It was ferried there with gear and faps down because they couldn't be retracted. Jimmy Doolittle was in the co-pilots seat for that flight. Dennis

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
My accident involvement has all been 60 to 70 years after the accident, yet we still sometimes find contributing factors that were missed. NTSB mentioned the flap position thing too. The flap position thing doesn't mean all that much to me. You can land with flaps up, you just have a higher landing ...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
So much speculation, but no real hard facts. I heard something about a possibility that #4 was giving them trouble, but possibly they mistakenly feathered #3, then tried to unfeather 3 and feathered 4. I would think that if there were time for a complete feather on 4, there should have been time to ...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
Many questions remain. Possibility of pilot error is disappointing, although "wrong engine" thing is plausible. I certainly hope you are correct in your theory about the dumpster being full of other debris. I believe that even with the fire damage, the remains of the plane are still worth a lot of m...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
Well, lets see. They noted that some propeller blades had separated from the propellers. No crap Sherlock, It crashed. What did you want them to do. Now a problem would be if they had separated BEFORE the crash, but that does not help the sensationalization . They mentioned that Propeller blad...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
That was some interesting watching. I started with the P-40 (Mustangs really don't do much for me - except Allison Mustangs). I had forgotten about New Zealand and their gun wielding warbirds. The Mustang videos shows that the ME-109 would probably have been going home and the mustang going down. He...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
Had never heard of "Bomber camp" before. Did a search. Interesting, but way out of my budget range. Are they actual functional .50s or Propane conversions? Propane "simu-fire" is still pretty impressive. Live, full auto ?????? I can see the "peace children" getting pretty upset about something like ...

Jennifer is a political appointee and her field of expertise is pipes and lubricants. Oops! My bad. Probably took offense to the (replic...

Thank you both for this information. There is much that I don't know, and probably never will. A little here and a little there. I would have thought, and did, that BOEING was putting the flexible guns and framework in ALL F models, but now I know otherwise. Same with the F models using the E type n...

Re: Collings B-17 Crash: 909
This subject seems to have kind of dropped from the news. There are a few things I still find disturbing, and a few things I have kind of looked into myself. Most disturbing was some buffoon commenting somewhere that "the engine fire = pilot distraction = pilot error. What a D--------. I have to fig...
