Liberty Foundion B-17

Post by terveurn »

Wondering what is the identity of the B-17 that the Liberty Bell Foundation is restoring.

As an aircraft mechanic, I was always taught that the cockpit section retains the serial number for the entire airframe.

Since the Liberty Foundation is using the cockpit section of 44-83387, will that be serial number for this rebuild.

Which one? They are restoring more than one.

That is not always the case.P-40 IDs go with the mainplane or wing.I thought it should be the fuselage as well but not always the case.

Might be because the FAA paperwork and registration already exists for the previous serial? I remember reading that's why 44-85813 was the ID chosen from the three airframes being combined for the Champaign Lady project - the other two, 44-83722 and 44-83316, had no previous civil registrations.
