Grand Island B-17's

Post by terveurn »

Just "discovered" a new training B-17 code

GI - Grand Island

assigned to 2nd AF - similar code set-up as Sioux City (SC) and Rapid City (RC)

GI on vertical stabilizer

Large three digit under serial number (last three of s/n) on stabilizer.

Large four digit on nose (last three of s/n).

Might be assigned to the 242nd AAFBU.

Have two B-17s with these tail codes (42-30620 & 42-6121) - other aircraft assigned (B-29, P-63 & C-45) to the 242nd AAFBU do not display these codes (same as other 2nd AF OTU units).

Yep, Grand Island did use the GI code and I may possibly have a photo of one or two of their attached Fortresses. Once B-29 training fired up quite a number of Forts were assigned for Phase training since there weren't enough B-29s to go around.
