B-17 "ash reciever"
B-17 "ash reciever"
Does anybody have any information on the ashtrays in the B-17? My pilot`s manual reprint shows one built into the bombardier`s panel, and two more mounted on brackets on the radio op and navigator`s table. I looked through my photo collection and don`t see them in the flying restorations, and I have only see one in photos of "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby"`s radio room. And I am not finding them in the -G illustrated part breakdown. Were these a rarity or some kind of a fluke in the B-17?

Yep, Ford ash trays. B-24s had them too.
And if I remember correctly some B-17s had little ashtrays attached to the control columns too.
Every one smoked back then.
I quit over ten years ago.

On the control column too? I have never seen photos of that before. I`ll have to keep my eyes peeled for that in the future.
Thanks all!

Re: B-17 "ash reciever"
I spent some time searching for the photo of this but could not find it. I have seen these ash receivers before--they look like little cups that are attached to the column. They have a small lip on them for resting a butt.
I looked at the B-29 reference book: B-29 IN DETAIL AND SCALE and you can see the factory installed ash receiver on the pilot's instrument panel.
I'll see if I can dig up the photos of the control column ash receciver.
