A tidbit of WW2 trivia that may only interest me but....

Post by Dan Johnson »

...I figured I'd share it since it's distantly "Air Force" related.

While going through the book on Hendricks Field in 1942, I came across a page with the photos of the 11 "Student Flying Instructors" at the field during the time the Hendricks B17Bs were used to film Air Force. I started looking to see if I could find anything out about them. So far I found two that were later KIA in B24s in the MTO, and one who stayed stateside during the war. A fourth, Robert W. Sternfels, turns up a year later as pilot of a B24D on the Ploesti raid in one of the most reproduced photos to come out of that raid. He was pilot of "The Sandman" shown crossing the target in the image below.

Any reason to post that photo is a good reason. I first saw it in Leon Wolff's Low Level Mission in about 1958 and it still resonates today.

WOW!!!
That photo says it all! I've seen it as well, several times. It excellently shows the lengths our airmen - and all our warriors - had to go to to fight "the last good war".

Thank you Dan, and thank you Steve !
