In reference to your comments about the framed nose piece, you've seemed to have forgotten about "My Gal Sal".

I don't know if you're just talking about those aircraft in the U.S., but there are, at least, three "E" model B-17s in New Guinea, including "Swamp Ghost", all of which have framed nose pieces.

Well, only three have a shot at being airborne again.
- The Swoose (What's the timetable on restoration with the Smithsonian?)
- Paul Allen's B-17E (if they ever put it back together)
- 41-2595 (Donations anyone?)

The "Swoose" will never fly again, and besides it's been so modified that it's really not much more than "D" shell with a "B" wing.
Since the "E" in Washington (Paul Allen's) flew to it's current base, it will probably be restored and flying, again, long before "THE RAT" is.
True, but...

Paul Allen's B-17E did indeed fly in, but is currently
a bombay, a tail turret, and a pile of parts without
financial backing.
