Ball Turret Internal to external ammo storage?

When did the Sperry Ball turret go from internal ammo to the external Ammo bins?
Fighters at 12 O'clock high

Good question!

I believe it was during the B-17G model run,
but at what block the change occurred
will take a little research to find.
