This one has popped-up a lot and I finally found the source of this aircraft's modifications

the 384th BG is the maintenance department that did this gun-ship mod.

Given the closure rate for two aircraft in a head on attack and restrictions of maneuver for the B-17, I have some doubts about the effectiveness of such a set up, although 6 fifties loaded with all tracer ammo could indeed be discouraging.
