Interesting; Hobbs had five B-17Fs in that series - 42-5110, 5116, 5118, 5167 and 5198, but AAIR doesn't list a ground collision for any except 5110 - and that was written off in a collision with two parked civilian a/c (one fatality) in Detroit on 11-20-43.

More goodies - thanks! The shot of 42-3205 #18 with the shortened tail is a new one for me.

What size template are you using for the photos? I measured them as having a height of 140p; if that's right, here's 42-102894 #10 in that size:

This listing is part of the Avon Park tail code list (3rd AF B-17's) I started several years ago (Avon Park, MacDill, Gulfport etc....) and and the Hobbs B-17's seemed a natural addition to this mess.

2nd AF B-17 are too easy (last 3 on the tail and last found on the nose with airfield code)

Each of the photos have been cropped down to 1.25" and let the width run wild (as long as it does not go out side the box (about 5.5 inches)) .

Then the document is compressed to 100 DPI to get rid of the trimmings and to keep the document small - just a very simple index.

All I am concerned about is the ID numbers -- while I have the originals untouched, for this reference, tail codes and serial numbers is what is important.

right now, I think this is a pretty comprehensive listing -- one of the largest collections of Hobbs aircraft I have seen.

Craig Fuller at AAIR sent me #10 when I found out it was one of the "six possibles" - but the only one of the six that had an accident (the top turret enclosure flew off and hit the left horizontal); in fact '894 had three (per AAIR) or four (per Osborne) incidents related to forced landings.

Attn terveurn: A photo of 42-29951 has turned up; no tail codes, but according to Osborne it spent about two weeks of May 1943 at Hobbs - is this correct, and do you know more?
