SAR B-17s 1949
SAR B-17s 1949
Found these on the life archives. It looks like they were part of a story on the search for a missing B-29. There are more, perhaps 8 or 9 let me know if you want me to post them. There were at least 6 SB-17s at this base. There was a shot of the airfield with 6 SB-17s on it. If the numbers on the boats are the last three of the serial number of hte a/c then I think we can id at least 2 or 3 of them.

Re: SAR B-17s 1949
do not think the numbers correspond with the aircraft serial number -- bottom aircraft boat 157 -- you can read the data block (first digits) and it is clearly a 44- number
44-6157 (worn out combat ship) or 44-8157 (MIA)

Re: SAR B-17s 1949
I got the bug and went through a boatload ( pun not intended) of SB-17s. Some of the numbers do indeed match the tail number. A few do not. Those few could just as well be using boats from another ship while theirs are being repaired. I can't think that the boats would have been built in numbers great enough to reach as high as 157 or 367

Re: SAR B-17s 1949
When you google the life archives and put in a search criteria it takes you back to a google page with a header "source:Life". after that you can re enter your search criteria, aIfter the "source: life" . IT will still give you random stuff, but less random. IT really is a difficult search engine. For instance the pics of the SAR b-17s were found under a B-29 search. Once you find a pic in the google menu, click on the "page" icon and then it will take you to the pictures from the same article. It can take hours to go through as for some reason it will recylce the same pics a dozen times and some will only show up ONCE. IT takes a lot of patience. It is not easy, which is why so few people persever through the process
