B-17D in revetment w/radar - any info?

Post by Chris Brame »

Spotted this in a large photo lot on eBay - went for more than I wanted to pay. Anyone know when and where this was taken, and isn't that a radar antenna under the wing?

Yes, a B-17 with the Hawaiian Air Depot camouflage. A really interesting photo but very little to go on.

Could you post a pic without the penny on the nose?

I think it's reasonable to assume that all the surviving B-17Cs and B-17Ds in Hawaii were over-painted after 7 December, but we need more photos.

Chris the best I can come up with is that It's Bellows Field on Oahu, and the photo must have been taken sometime after April-May 1942 because the rudder stripes are gone. Could very well be a 72nd Bomb Squadron, 5th Bomb Group plane but hard to be absolutely sure.

Were there any clues in the rest of the photo lot and do you still have the eBay link?

Here's the completed listing; it was a mishmash from different places and dates. Seller's ID is "dkochi" and he does have/has had other Hawaii photos:

Update: Turns out the winning bidder bought out the lot and broke it up; the photo was relisted with a "one cent discount" :

I was in the bidding until the end but lost. At least I got a slightly better image out of the deal...
