44-8013 PFF stinger tail

Post by jmkendall »

I noticed awhile back that some of the PFF birds did not appear to have been through the Cheyanne Mod Center. I was asked, at the time to provide pics, as the only ones I had seen were copyrighted, I put this on the back burner.

While going through Life's Kingman photos and looking at the aircraft in the background I came across this aircraft. Clearly with a stinger tail, and clearly had been assigned to the 390th BG. Note that the PFF radar unit has been removed.

This was "Chug a Lug" :

From what I understand, there was only two modification centers in the United States that did PFF mods -- Northwest Airlines (Minneapolis Municipal) was the primary and the Air Depot at Dayton (they were located near one of the Radar training school) - Langley was also a major PFF training and modification center.

This is clearly an middle production B-17G (as well as being a Lockheed built ship) -- Lockheed ships generally went to Denver for modifications so a lot of these production did not have the Cheyenne tail mod.
