I HAVE A BOOK OF B-17G FUSELAGE EQUIPMENT INSTALLATIONS

Post by Campy »

In going through my mother's estate, I have come across a bound Boeing book, the first page of which is titled "Perspective Drawings of Fuselage Equipment Installations - B-17G." It is report No. D-6220 and contains drawings with overlays of the aircraft's equipment. The book's approximately 37 pages (not including the many overlays) are 8 1/2 x 11 inches. It was last revised 2-16-45. My mother worked at Boeing during the war.

The book has some water damage about one inch up from the bottom, but nothing that impacts the drawings. The Boeing cover actually says (somewhat difficult to read) "Handbook of Weight and Balance Data for the Model B-17F Airplane." This title is in contrast to the cover page cited above, and the actual contents of the book match the cover page, not the book's cover.

I am wondering if the booklet has any value, whether financial or for those restoring this aircraft. And, if so, how I would determine who or what group would be interested.

My somewhat uninformed opinions, for those who want to read

Original books are always preferable to copies.
Picture clarity suffers when photocopied, and in some
instances, the guys working on the planes often find hints
in the background - which is often not reproduced in
detail by copying.
Books like that are useful for the restorers for that reason.
The data contained in the books about weight/balance/performance
is somewhat less relevant today, as the fuel, equipment, and
aircraft weight is different.

I've seen original books on ebay go for cubic dollars.
Every so often, you can get one for a song.

As for which group may be interested, I can say that
we're interested, even though our plane is an 'E' model.
We've done work for other '17 restorations, and that
equipment overlay book would be helpful.

And a copy would be nice for the rest of us.
I am building a B-17 cockpit section as some of you know and am hoping to incorporate a fuselage and radio room, so any info on these areas would be a bonus for me.

You should be able to find a good and worthwhile home for it, and Bill and the guys with Desert Rat would be the best home for it in my opinion.
They are the guys to go to for information on B-17 so it would increase their fantastic library of knowledge.

Thanks for the information. I know that my mother would want the book to find a home with a group that would truly appreciate the book and the plane.

So, Bill, how do I get in touch with you? I would be glad to send some photos of the book and a page or two so you can see what I have. Where is your group located?

By the way, it can take me a day or three to respond to posts sometimes. Depends on my work load - I'm retired and days are busy here in the mountains of Colorado.

Sorry, but I forgot to reply to those of you who might want a copy. I see no reason that I couldn't make copies. However, the overlays might be problematic. The paper of the overlay is not real transparent. It is fine on the original, but a copy may not work well. I could make a copy of each page along with its overlay, and try to align them on a light table before I afixed the two pages together.

Thoughts?

Campy,
If it has info about the hydraulic panel mounted behind the co-pilot's seat it would be invaluable to TEXAS RAIDERS rebuild.
Ours was moved from its original position and we are moving it back.
Please contact me via Private message option.

thanks,

Spanner,

Sorry it took so long, but I think I found it.

Should give me a good view of the parts and stuff.
See your email later tonight.

Bill,
I got the blueprint drawings but they are not what I am looking for.
The drawings are the panel itself.

What we need is the routing of the tubing LEAVING the panel and going through the airplane.
And we have the repair and TO manuals (with their drawings) and they DON'T show the details we are looking for.
We really need to see photos of a real installation on an unmolested B17F or G.

Thanks,

Don

fuselage installations

Please keep me in mind for a copy of the installations. It would be very helpful to me in my work. I want it for research and reference, not for copying. Thanks, and let me know the cost.
