I was surfing around and came across an article of a B-17 Wreck not far from Hamilton AFB in Marin County. In the article it mentioned that the aircraft was stripped of some components; pushed into a revine and covered with dirt.
I grew up not far from there and still have lots of contacts. One of them is a Police Dispatcher in that area. He told me he had been to that site many times and that there is indeed a buried B-17 there. AND that there is "a large chunk of fuselage still visible".
From the crash pics it came down somewhat intact. And there is no mention of it being blown up. So how is it that in this day and age of going all around the world to recover bits and pieces of B-17 that no effort has been made to see whats left of this one?
If anyone is interested I can give the contact info for my friend. He is an aviation nut. He would know more I'm sure.

We'll see if Mr. Veronico chimes in on this one...he may have some additional information.

Chime-in: Marin County CA. B-17 wreck
Nice foto JMKendall. A couple of the B-17 restoration teams have shown interest in that wreck, but obtaining permission to even make test excavations has proven problematic. At this point it appears the aircraft will stay where it is. However, a little erosion might help things along and convince the powers-that-be that removing the wreck would be good for the aircraft and good for the land, too. Know that one of the Mt. Tam rangers who is an enthusiastic Wreckchaser keeps an eye on the site as he, too, would like to see the components go to a restoration project. You might consider cross-posting your photo and inquiry on the message board at Wreckchasing.com (not intended as a plug) to see what comes up.
