How do you become a 'warbird' pilot?

I was just wondering how people become pilots of vintage aircraft like ww2 fighters, bombers etc. In the UK there are many companies who operate a fleet of 'warbirds', so the pilots do not neccessarily own the actual aircraft. Anybody know how these pilots get into the companies and what sort of training they go through. Is it more common for the pilots to be ex-military or current/ex civillian/airline pilots?
