Interesting B-17G Plexiglas

Post by DryMartini »

There is a photo of "Wee Willie", a B-17G-15-BO,
on the WIX web site at:

The interesting thing about this photo is this:

The plane looks to have flown about 106 missions at this time,
according to my bomb count. :-)
The nose glass is a B-17F style nose.
In the book, "Fortress In The Sky" by Bowers, page 177,
there is a picture of her after 4 missions, and she has the
stubby B-17G-style nose glass.

Not that changes were uncommon, but I found this
interesting, as the chin turret guns supposedly could
elevate to the point of hitting the plexi.
