Potential B-24 Restoration

Post by FoCoB17G »

Hello all,

A while ago one of our members, suzyQ194, messaged me regarding a B-24 which was stored at a local airport back in the '70s. The airport closed over 10 years ago, but there is still a heli pad, as well as a parts resale company.

Yesterday, I drove down to the airport to take a look around and see what I could dig up. A nice gentleman there had seen the airframe last year. He said that he would try to contact the owner on my behalf.

The member who contacted me said that he has a friend who may be interested in purchasing the airframe for restoration. Over the past two weeks I have sent suzyQ194 a few messages but received no response, so I'm not sure if this will go through, but either way this B-24 should be back on the radar. I don't know the owner, or if he would want to sell or restore, but I hope he would be open to one or the other.

I'll update this thread with more details as I can discover them.

Yes, I am being vague for the moment, at least until I can talk with the owner. He may not wish the airframe to become widely known.

are you talking about Liberator II AL557

Everybody in the Warbird industry knows about this airframe -- been sitting disassembled since 1995.

Don Whittington has refused to sell it for the past 15 years.

I most certainly am! Yes, most know, but don't know the actual location.

From what I understand, it's been disassembled since the 70s- or earlier.

There are supposed to be two B-17 outer wing panels from a Bolivian B-17 that are in the same lot. One has CP-588 marked on it, an unidentified B-17 by serial number. It would be nice to get a close look at those parts for any identifying information.

Thanks for the info Scott!

I drove by today, and... It's gone! The B-24 has moved, not sure where or why.

I drove by Regal Air again yesterday, and I can see a set of B-24 ailerons in one of their trailers, hitched to a company truck. Gave them a call today wondering if they had found any information, but they responded by saying that they haven't had time to look into it, and they will call back Monday. Interesting...

I hope that wherever it's going, it will be reassembled and not parted out even more.

Andy intends to build everything in Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico.
I broached the idea with Andy of building the B 17's you propose there and restore the B 24.
He said we will see. Which in my experience with Andy so far means yes.

Hi Tim,

I'm sorry you've been having a hard time, I too, recently had a similar experience.

An update on the B-24: It has been sold to an unknown buyer, with Regal Air not returning the call. I'm afraid that whatever happens next won't be known for a while...
