B-17E serials?

Post by KnockoutDropper »

Trying to find any info on these Pacific-based B-17Es, including serial numbers. Maybe Mr. Birdsall would know? Any help is much appreciated!

Oklahoma Sooner . . . and Later

Post by Steve Birdsall »

The only one of these that I’ve been able to positively identify is 41-2630, Oklahoma Sooner.

This B-17E originally served with the 19th Bomb Group in Australia and was flown to Hawaii in late October 1942 by Captain Bernie Barr. There she was reassigned to the 394th Bomb Squadron of the 5th Bomb Group.

The aircraft was regularly flown by Lieutenant Don Prickett during July 1943, and was also associated with Captain Elmer Scoggins in the 23rd Squadron. (In August 1943 the 394th was chosen to become a B-24 “snooper” squadron, and their B-17Es were transferred to the 23rd Squadron, which became the only – and last – B-17 squadron in the South Pacific Theater.)

The photograph was taken at the 13th Air Depot in New Caledonia where most of the surviving 13th Air Force B-17s were prepared for the flight home.

And 41-2630 ended her days at . . . Altus, Oklahoma.
