44-8051 at Alexandria + another mystery

Post by Chris Brame »

This one just turned up on eBay, dated November 1944:

Another shot of it I already have (terveurn, I think I got it from you?):

Zooming in on the tail on the right:

Tail code 194?. The only OD/NG B-17 from Alexandria that seems to work is B-17G 42-31948, which was lost (along with both crews) in a midair with B-17F 42-5355 during a 54-ship training flight on May 7, 1945.

44-8051 was a popular B-17 at Alexandria - have a whole bunch of these shots:

This one goes with the E-bay shot -- only three crew number differences

For what it's worth, I got that last one off eBay and have the second image of the left side too with that crew. I have the high bid on the first one. Hope you guys aren't after it too. I have a thing for Alex crews :)

Gentlemen's agreement: Unless a shot of a certain Hobbs AAF/Kentuckian B-17G shows up, I'll leave the bidding on the Fortress photos to you!

Someone wanted that one bad. As much as I did, it wasn't worth going overboard for :)
