I'll be posting some pictures I picked up at the Antique fair. One looks like a B-17E that is on the fire pit at Scott Field 1-29-44. This one has what looks like mission markings and a name that could be Tawny?????
Second is a post war B-17G, post war, with painted out markings at Dartmouth airport, Halifax
Lastly is an early B-17 in Puerto Rico. with a large "63' on the tail. Shark fin.

Yes Indeedy!!
THIS MAY go along with B-17B 38-268 "79" which I have all this time thought was an aberration!
It appears that ANOTHER establishment used these aircraft, OR ELSE at Hendricks Field, Sebring, Sharktail B-17 aircraft [YB-17 through B-17D] were "00"-"18," B-17E aircraft were "25"-"57," and more B-17B, B-17C, and B-17D aircraft were "60"-"79"!!
This is, of course, only a theory until more evidence surfaces.
Gratefully,
Dan Katz

I'm thinking the higher numbered B models were from Amarillo taken after the Sebring time.pokryshkin wrote:Yes Indeedy!!

Dan, that sounds like the answer: Sebring/Hendricks was allotted "00" - "59", and Amarillo was allotted "60" - "119" or something similar.
We DO need more evidence, though.

Y'all have been doing this early war research a lot longer than I have, but I do have a question: Did Amarillo do B-17 flight training or just maintenance?
I have a bunch of photos from Amarillo that show a number of early machines and only a few have the large nose and tail numbers. I thought I'd posted them all earlier, but I may be mistaken. I'd be glad to put them up when I get home from work tonight if you'd like.
Keep up the great detective work!
Scott

Scott, as far as I know, Dan Johnson has posted most of the Hendricks Field photos that are non-Warner Brothers/Air Force.
While you were doing your investigations, did you think to check on HENDRICKS FIELD/SEBRING, FLORIDA photos?
Just curious.
Warmest grateful regards, best wishes, and seasons greetings,
Dan Katz

Scott, it was your photos, posted on WIX I believe, of those early 17s that made me think that the color photo of Mary Ann with the higher number connected her to Amarillo at one point. as yours showed the higher numbers as well.Second Air Force wrote:Y'all have been doing this early war research a lot longer than I have, but I do have a question: Did Amarillo do B-17 flight training or just maintenance?

Just speculating, but it makes some sense that way

Up until the last few months all of our research has been geared toward Second Air Force training stations and the B-29 training program. The conversion to B-29 mechanic training was the impetus for requesting the Amarillo file. The B-17 photos were a bit of a surprise that I'm happy to share. Now that we're members of the Vintage Flying Museum our focus has shifted to all things B-17 and the PFF program. On our next trip we'll try to dig into the Hendricks file. Hopefully they have a serial number listing or photos.
