Comments: "My father, Arnold Carow told me that Paul Mantz didn't have as good of eyesight as in his younger days, and that might have contributed to being too low to clear the irregular sand dunes. As a kid, I took some pictures of the Ryan used in the movie "Spirit of St. Louis" at LAX. It arrived inside a Globemaster cargo plane. Jimmy Stuart and June Allyson were there."

Comments: "The article concerning the crash of Paul Mantz and the "Phoenix" is excellent. I have seen the movie many times. My father, a pilot, always thought that the movie was silly. It is sad that Mr. Mantz gave his life in this accident. Even a novice could see the wheels mounted in the skids which were never in the construction sequence of the movie. I am surprised that if the director was so concerned about the flying sequences he never seemed to be concerned about the wheels which stuck out like a sore thumb. The decision making concerning the construction of the "Phoenix" seems to be flawed throughout. The added weight in the tail should have been considered as a threat to loading and the fact that the gear were hard mounted. The break was instantaneous and could not have been a surprise. This was an accident waiting to happen. Mr. Mantz and the entire engineering crew made mistakes and poor judgements which cost the life of Mr. Mantz. Very sad. Thank you again for a most excellent article."

Comments: My parents started flying lessons at Martin Aviation in 1961 when I was 10 years old. At least once a week I would go with them and they would drop me off at Tallmantz. I would walk in and usuaully find Mr. Mantz or Tallman and ask if I could go out in the yard and look at airplanes. They always gave permission with the admonishiment "just don't flip any switches kid". I learned to fly at Newport Air in 1976. I would walk right by Tallman's office on the way out to pre-flight and talked to him quite often. One day just after I got my PPL the owner asked if I would like a couple hours of free flying. I got to take Frank Tallman up to Agua Dulce in a C-150 as they were filming Baa Baa Blacksheep up there at the time. Quite a thrill for a 50hr pilot to chauffer Frank Tallman around. Dave Jesse was a family friend and Eddie Martin was a frequent dinner guest. All fueled my interest in old airplanes. I have owned and flown several over the years and love every minute of flying.

I'd like to see any photos you might have and possibly use them in the Tallmantz Photo Gallery pages if you allow it. I sent you an email message with more info. Thanks."
Comments: "Really enjoyed your site. Came across your site while archiving my father's photographs. (Richard Stauss, known by Dick Stauss) He was a corporate photographer for Ryan Aeronautical in the 60's, and worked with Frank Tallman. I was lucky enough to accompany my dad on one his shoots for Mr. Tallman, it was a great day! He was the one of the nicest men I ever met. I have a great potrait shot of Mr. Tallman, pls let me know if you would like to see it. Also I'm pretty sure my dad took the pic of the indoor display area of the Movieland Museum (Santa Ana Public Library ones) and might have some others."
